Description du film :
On a hot summer day three boys are splashing around the river. One of them gets his hand caught in the stone masonry of a railway bridge. Many peasants, the passengers from the train, which stops nearby, and the crews of tanks taking part in a military exercise flock to the scene of accident. People drop out whatever they are doing; even the maneuvers get stopped to come to the help of a child. Action must be taken quickly because the water level is rising fast. The concerted efforts of all involved people help save the child. Thus a particular case, an extreme situation has served as a test of significant and insignificant in our life, which often happens to become transposed.»Torrid Noon« is about human solidarity and the resolve of the Bulgarian people. This film belongs to a period of Bulgarian Cinema during the late fifties and the early sixties known as »the poetic wave« and was mainly associated with the films on subjects from the antifascist resistance.
The first 35 minutes are a portrayal of the hard-working peasants in the fields and the power of the Bulgarian army. Then the story of three boys splashing around the river on a hot summer day kicks in ...
Aleko gets his hand caught in the stone masonry of a railway bridge. With his head barely above the rushing water he is sure to drown if help is not found fast. One friend goes back to the harvest workers while the other stops a passenger train.
The river becomes chaotic as many people arrive on the scene, but nothing gets done until the Army arrives with tanks and bulldozers. The water level is rising fast and with the efforts of everyone they manage to dam the river. More equipment arrives, the mayor, a helicopter with a doctor and members of a bicycle team all stop to help.
Propaganda? Nationalism? This film is a bit of both and illustrates through this extreme situation what is significant and insignificant in our lives.
